It doesnt matter what the final score is...just being a Bull already makes you a loser.

I am (not very surprisingly) going to give my opinion on something I know very little about.

I have just finished watching the Stormers/Bulls final and actually enjoyed the bits I caught between taking a bath and painting my toenails.

As an avid supporter of any team that plays against the Bulls or the Sharks, and despite not even understanding why the whistle is blown EVER, my top team has always been the Stormers. It also seems to be the trend in Joburg to not support out local Lions – who might, or might not have played recently, but either way, I guessed it would be a game worth watching.

That’s the great thing about sport…you can pick a team in any sport, not have ANY idea what is going on, never watch a game or even know which country they are touring and you can still say “Go Stormers” around someone from the Western Cape, and have an unbreakable bond before even exchanging names.

I usually like to pick the underdog, and have pretty mean things to say about Ferrari/Man United/some other top team, and have undying patriotism to a horse named Goat (check the Durban July schedule), or the hottest tennis player on the court at the time. Just imagine my excitement when my favourites Chennai Super Kings won the IPL this year! I gloated as if my support had actually made some sort of a difference…when I hadn’t even watched one game.

Anyway…back to tonight’s game. I had no idea what was happening around the tries, conversions, scrums and line outs – which I think is still a pretty good score card for me. I also recognised a few names and faces – really not bad for someone who never watches sport. I did watch the ceremony at the end where everyone has a little chat with Darren Scott, and at that moment realised that the emphasis he made on the word ‘disappointment’ around Schalk Burger. It made me feel sad for my dear Stormers, as he really rubbed it in. I cant say I would extend my emotional spectrum to those extremes when it comes to sports, but their sad faces were quite touching.

The Bulls, of course, lapped up their victory as expected and each received what looked like a (fancy) promo gift from the German Beer Fest. Das great! I’d be a bit disappointed in THAT to be honest.

So how do I feel about the Bulls? I do like Victor Matfield. He’s pretty cool/scary. Francois Hougaard owns a GHD and the most feathered mullet ever (just because you can, doesn’t mean you should), and they managed to bring Soweto to life! And THAT is Ayoba!!
