My mind went into overdrive and has left me feeling annoyed. My free time outweighs my responsibilities at the moment, but still I find myself falling into the ‘I need to please everyone’ trap. It’s scary, and I see it happening everywhere. A person’s entire personality can change when they are around a supposed authoritative figure. It was something I have been guilty of for a long time – working on it though. The fear of losing a job; losing respect; burning bridges, etc. ensured the obligatory and expected fake smiles and forced laughs.
But that’s not what keeps us our jobs or gives us respect. I will blame it on the hideous corporate world either way because who decided that hiding your true self, and fearing a boss was the best way to move forward? It’s celebrity; it’s coolness through association; it’s speaking just that little bit loader when name dropping – it’s a very clear indication that the people of this world are seeking far more acceptance than we think.
This is in no way restricted to the working world, but through all forms of interaction. Friends can’t be honest with each other; people aren’t willing to stand up for what they believe in, and no one should see you cry.
There is no authenticity anymore…why? Because we won’t allow it. We don’t want to hear that people don’t like us; that our music taste is a bit too eclectic; that we have a bad hairstyle. We don’t want to be the one saying these things either.
I guess I don’t look at life very conventionally. I do believe you should take responsibility seriously – but rarely anything else. I don’t believe in sitting in an office all day if there is nothing to do.
Your health comes first – this is a lesson you will learn…it’s up to you how you want to learn it.
Budget for the poor before budgeting for yourself – especially if you are bad at saving.
Don’t ask why bad things happen to good people, ask why good things happen to bad people…like you…and me – and then count your blessings.
Stop saying you like things that you don’t – you will get caught out.
You can only get respect if you give respect. Start by respecting your elders…it’s a sure way for everyone to experience it’s reality.
I wonder if I was to join any other society on earth if they would see me as an adult. I’m pretty lazy and like to complain. I think they would be more concerned about selflessness than candles on my last birthday cake.
Then that day hits…the day where you realize that things aren’t running according to your ‘ideal’ plan. I’m 31, no real relationship, or stable job, or kids, or house – as planned. I still feel like I did 10 years ago...alone in this big, bad, scary world…and I’m bored.
For some reason, I see myself as a complete failure if I don’t have what it takes in conquer every challenge in life. I very rarely ask for help, and then beat myself up each step of the way for not doing ‘life’ better, for choosing the wrong option, for letting illness or exhaustion get in the way of some sort of ‘success’ I’m not even sure of.
No wonder people are making the mistakes they do.
So go out, step on toes! Speak up when something upsets you. Cry when something is sad. Tell that boy you like him. Ask questions. Admit defeat. Learn something new every day. Pray. Lots of sleep. Lots of water. Practice working on your boundaries. Lower your expectations on others. And don’t ever, EVER, let them rain on your parade.
